MIDBot X Micro:bit

The micro:bit is an educational and creative tool to inspire a new generation of young people. It can be used across the curriculum, not just in STEM subjects. It can help give young people the knowledge and skills to move from being consumers of digital information, to being designers and creators of new tools to enhance learning, to solve problems or just to have fun, enabling them to make the most of 21st Century life and the economy.

You can use your BBC micro:bit for all sorts of cool creations, from robots to musical instruments – the possibilities are endless. This little device has an awful lot of features, like 25 red LED lights that can flash messages. There are two programmable buttons that can be used to control games or pause and skip songs on a playlist. Your BBC micro:bit can detect motion and tell you which direction you’re heading in, and it can use a low energy Bluetooth connection to interact with other devices and the Internet – clever!
 

MIDBot release a toolkit for this excellent controller, this toolkit (MIDBot X Microbit) extend Microbit to make it more easy to connect to external device. When MIDBot meet Microbit, it mean mobility, connectivity and portability. Now this toolkit have already adopted by various school STEM project, take a look our demo videos below.

 

MIDbotMouse

It's one of three major component of toolkit, it provide mobility for Microbit. This board have 2 motor drive and 6 standard sensor slot. It can connect to external device by using standard protocol such as UART, SPI and I2C. It come with 1 RGB LED module, 1 impact sensor module and a pair of IR sensor module.

It can apply to different STEM project. For example, in "The WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition and Carnival 2017" we use it to build a robotic basketball game. And we also use it to make a toy bus become a smart bus that can follow route, sense obstacle and read NFC tag on road.

MIDbotConnect

One of three main component of toolkit especially design for portability. It us cell battery and equip with buzzer and audio jack. It have 2 standard sensor slot to let sensor plug into it.

Micro:bit default have 3 main I/O Pin for external connection, and actually it have more than 20 I/O pin can use. We design this connect board for user easy to use other I/O pin, simply use wire cable can connect any other external device.

Demo Case

 

It use Microbit internal bluetooth function and buzzer on MIDBot Sense to build a distance detector, it can classify the approach of friendly unit or enemy unit. It is fun for group project for STEM activities.

Simply plug an ultrasound sensor on MIDBot Mouse and program Microbit, then it become a robotic car. 

One Micro:bit installed on MIDBot Sense and detect controller's gesture by reading accerometer data. Another Microbit on MIDBot Mouse to receive command transmitted by bluetooth, then control motor to move.

Bluetooth Controlled Robot

This demo show it's possible to use two Microbit on MIDBot Sense to replace original IR control with bluetooth and user's gesture. 

Robotic Basketball Player

This is robotic basketball game open for public on "The WorldSkills Hong Kong Competition and Carnival 2017". It use MIDBot Mouse to control an robotic arm to simulate shooting action.
